“To be a mirror for people, and to reflect back a sense of our best humanity.”
Flight and Fall is a short documentary about the dualities in the work of famed and prolific artist Charles Umlauf.
Umlauf was primarily a bronze sculptor, but whose work spanned multiple mediums, scales, and subject matters. What makes his body of work so captivating is its many contrasts and contradictions—its dialectics. Love and hate, light and dark, sacred and profane. As an artist Umlauf was interested in the entire range of human nature, while still imbuing all of his work with enormous affection and compassion for his subjects.
What made this film so special was that it gradually became as much a portrait of the art historians we interviewed: Dr. Katie Robinson Edwards and Dr. Louis Waldman, who both sought to share Umlauf’s message of, “empathy, acceptance, and justice for all of humanity.”
The name of the documentary, "Flight and Fall", comes from a gallery exhibition originally produced by Dr. Edwards, the Umlauf Museum’s curator, who is featured throughout the film with her poetic insights about art, history, and life.
